Shiny and very happy

2010 was a ‘shining’ success for Graphic Design. Jessica Sidaway (Pictured, 2nd left) won the Shine Awards, a design competition by global branding company, Coley Porter Bell.

Award Manager Barbara Ridley said, “What makes this win particularly satisfying for staff is that this is the second year running a Graphic Design student from Staffordshire University has won the competition.”

Like hundreds of other entrants across the country, Jessica submitted a design as a level two student. Her entry was successful and she was invited to continue further in the competition, presenting a portfolio of her work at an interview, and, with ten other finalists, designing a poster to promote the 2011 Shine Awards. Jessica attended an awards ceremony in London in September, where it was announced that she was the overall winner. On learning of her success, Jess said “I just couldn’t believe it. On the train on the way down, my mum and I were complaining about the cost of the train tickets, but everything proved worth the effort I put into the competition.”

Jessica won prize money of £3000, and a three month work placement at Coley Porter Bell. She said, “I am really looking forward to the placement in the summer – it will be a platform to the design industry.” It is an enviable opportunity; last year’s winner Jia Ying Gnoh so impressed the company that he was invited to stay on for another three months at the end of his placement
