New Blood, sweat and tears!

After seven days of hard labour, 17 silk-screens, two reams of chip shop paper, half a ton of black ink, buckets of blood sweat and tears and some very sore arms, we give you ‘TEN’.

‘TEN’ is a hand made publication, showcasing ten pieces of work from this year’s BA (Hons) Graphic Design and Illustration students at Staffordshire University in Stoke on Trent. The project was specially commissioned, designed and hand printed by the students for the D&AD New Blood exhibition at the Truman Brewery in London, later this month.

Special thanks go to John Ellis, Mathew Lucas, Gary Devreede and Lily Blythe for all their hard work and effort to realise this project. Also a special mention to John Platt for supplying buckets of ink, fresh screens every day and years of experience. We’d also like to thank Ben (I can count to eight) Anslow and Matt Hurst for helping us to re-print (oops, we made a spelling mistake, and had to re-print a whole section) the final record breaking four screen run, and also for his alertness on the job.

And finally to Jim Williams for all of his help, encouragement and chip shop paper folding techniques

P-p-p-pipped at the p-p-p-post at Penguin

Congratulations to Gary Devreede who was only one of twelve shortlisted students from an entry of almost 2,000 submissions to the Penguin Design Awards.

A £1,000 cash prize and a six week work placement at Penguin was up for grabs. P-p-p-ipped at the p-p-p-post by a worthy opponent, Gary's work was both innovative and original - and won him a great deal of praise from the judges at Penguin.

D&AD New Blood

New Blood is only a few days away and Staffordshire Graphic Design & Illustration students are getting prepared for an intense few days of networking, presenting and experiencing one of the highlights of the year.

The Truman Brewery once again hosts the event, from Thursday 30th June - Monday 4th July, so if you are in the area, pop-in and see us on our stand.

Meanwhile, there are a few forgotten images from previous year's events...recently discovered...

Ben books himself a merit!

A creatively charged 'a-fair'!

D&AD held their Awards night at the Royal Armoury in London on June 16th. A unique first in that student and professional awards were combined during the evening - which was a lavish and creatively charged affair. Richard Kingham, Level 6 Graphic Design student from Staffordshire was nominated to win the Open Graphic brief. Unfortunately he was pipped to the post but thoroughly enjoyed the occasion.

Champagne and Pimms was the order of the day/evening and black tie (combined with multi-coloured mountain boots in most cases) was sort of optional. The awards combined student and professional branding, advertising, animation, film, graphic design, Illustration, Packaging, Photography, Digital work,, Typography, Product, Copywriting, Marketing, Music Video, Editorial Design and Art Direction. Winners and nominees from as far wide as Japan, South Africa and of course Stoke on Trent, enjoyed viewing the best the creative world has to offer - culminating in the President's Award, which went to someone called Neville Brody (??). Did I mention there was a fair ?; complete with dodgems, a big wheel and carousel.

(they let ANYONE in don't they!!??) Ted on his 'first', 'small', free, glass of Pimms..........
