LOVE+CRAFT

‘The first in a series of North West events — join us to examine the value in executional finesse with Animade, Craig Oldham and our hosts, LOVE’.

YCN headed to Manchester on the 29th September to examine the importance of finely-crafted, well-executed work, with Animade, Craig Oldham and hosts, LOVE

Fittingly hosted in the spacious surrounds of the LOVE studio, the importance of craft in creative execution was explored, and examples that demonstrate its value were shared during the event.

Sharing their ideas and experiences were Tom Judd and James Chambers — Co-Founders of London-based animation and interactive design specialists Animade. Their's is a belief that "the tiny details leave a lasting impression. They add charm, create interest and — when done well — make a project simply feel ‘right’." Tom and James shared examples that back up this belief (combining their own work with work they love from elsewhere), and talked through basic animation and digital production principles often overlooked as projects are pushed through.

Joining them was local designer Craig Oldham. Craig's practice spans a bounty of disciplines: brands, books, films and exhibitions have all been crafted for his clients — and indeed for his own enjoyment and promotion too. His publication, In Loving Memory of Work is arguably one of the finest examples of print in recent years.  Craig spoke about the importance of detail, and how an unerring focus on executional finesse has led to awards from the Art Directors Club, D&AD and Creative Review. Craig will draw from his own portfolio, and more broadly from recent discoveries and observations.

YCN's Nick Defty  also shared some relevant examples, based on the recent discoveries our from YCN’s own Editorial team; putting questions to the speakers, and inviting more from guests.

Staffordshire Summer of Succes

It's been a frantic, productive, creative and highly successful few months this summer in the Graphic Design and Illustration camp! A fabulous degree show in June was followed by our annual journey to D&AD New Blood in London (during the hottest time of the year...so far). This has been coupled with a lot of work placement activity, offers of employment, competition wins and students embarking on fruitful and exciting careers.
